During the First World War (1914 - -1918) the ground where Ashburton High School now stands, was allotments. Before that the ground was part of Beckenham Golf Club, and before that again, was the local race course! After the war, in 1919, the Local Authority, then Croydon Corporation,required the allotment land back, and offered the plotholders the chance to buy land on the south side of Glenthorne Avenue, which they accepted. The Society was formed in 1922. Since then there have been many changes, roadways, canteen, trading hut, toilets and car park have been added, and water supply, drainage pipes and electricity installed.
